sustainablevineyarddeLorimier Winery has been practicing sustainable farming techniques for many years. It has been Ken & Diane Wilson’s goal to achieve sustainability for the resulting quality wines along with a commitment to the environment for the benefit of future generations. Our sustainable practices are realized in many forms, but primarily through water conservation, recycling, use of organic growing practices including encouraging pest control through attracting raptors in our vineyards.

When done correctly all three aspects of sustainability – the land, the people, and the business thrive. Sustainability provides Environmental, Economic, and Social Equity Benefits. The land stays healthy and preserved in agriculture, people are trained and treated with respect, and the family business thrives and endures.

Our sustainable environmental practices are realized in many forms. Some examples include water conservation, recycling, composting, use of organic growing practices including integrated pest management and encouraging pest control through attracting beneficial insects and raptors in our vineyards. We employ environmentally friendly farming, conservation and utilize best practices to minimize our impact on the environment.

Cover Crops

Planting cover crops between the vines helps rebuild and replace nutrients in the soil and creates a habitat for attracting beneficial insects. Cover Crops also provide erosion control, and help loosen the soil so water can penetrate mere effectively.

Water Conservation

We do Soil Mapping to determine best irrigation practices, and we employ deficit irrigation to minimize water use and increase wine quality.

Composting

Our composting practice includes all organic material generated from harvest. This greatly reduces the use for fertilizers as well improving the quality of or soil.

Reducing Carbon Footprint

We employ data gathering from weather stations to maximize farming efficiency in vineyard applications and we practice limited soil tilling to prevent the release of Co2 and minimize erosion.

Fish friendly Farming

We protect and improve rare and endangered salmon habitat, and eliminate runoff from waterways. Being a good steward of the land is critical to us as well as to all animals that reside nearby.

Creating Animal Habitat

We build Owl boxes, Raptor perches, Bat boxes, and create a healthy habitat and a natural control for pests such as insects, rodents, gophers, and moles. We plant a variety of plant species to increase biodiversity and develop an integrated pest management program.

Recycling

We engage in best practices and recycle glass, cardboard, and even corks. Staff and guests are strongly encouraged to recycle: Recycling bins are clearly marked and placed at convenient locations for vineyard, cellar and tasting room staff and guests. Top-down culture of reduce, reuse and recycle through selection of materials used for everyday and events. Reuse and repurpose of materials throughout various locations.
